How can I get started with the Bible?

The Bible is a unique book – altogether matchless. In fact, it is by far the most read book in the world. Time and again, when you read the Bible, you cannot help but think that it couldn’t have been written without God.

When you start with the Bible, it’s a good idea to begin reading the new testament. Here, you can read about what Jesus did, said, and what He meant to the people that met Him!
In the old testament, the first thing you can read might be the Book of Psalms along with the Book of Jonah, and the last part of the Book of Isaiah, chapters 53 through 66.
 

Keep the focus on the new testament, and let Jesus become the main character you try to understand! The Bible says, that if we want to know what God is like, we need to look at Jesus! Jesus gives us the right picture of what God is like! God became man in Jesus!


Jesus said:
And he who sees Me sees Him (God) who sent me.
(The Gospel of John, chap. 12:45)


Remember
  • Don’t just read the Bible as some good story, but as God speaking into your life!
  • Find like-minded people, that you can talk to about the Bible!
  • Develop a personal relationship to God, so that He can speak to you personally through His word!
  • Ask God, that He may give you insight and strength through His word!


Think of your time studying the Bible as...
  • a treasure hunt!
  • a spotlight, that lights up your way through life!
  • a protection against spiritual oppression! (amongst things, God's word can drive out depression and anxiety)
  • a sure path to greater life wisdom and blessing!

 
Facts about the Bible
  • Written over a time-period of 1500 years
  • Consists of 66 books – of which 39 are found in the old testament, and 27 are found in the new testament
  • The four gospels (the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) have been written by eye-witnesses to the life of Jesus – and no specialist in antique writings doubts the authenticity of the new testament.
  • There are about 5000 old Greek and 10.000 old Latin, handwritten copies of the new testament that are virtually identical, and that give the new testament the greatest credibility, in comparison with other antique writings from both before and after the birth of Christ.



You can get the Bible in many different versions in English, such as:
  • The King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, and the more language-wise updated New King James Version (NKJV)
  • More modern versions, such as New International Version (NIV) and New Living Translation (NLT), etc.
  • The ESV Reader’s Bible (w. more) – if you would like to try and read the Bible without chapters and verse numbers.
  • And many more!
